Real world sizing quirks you need to know

A simple size conversion chart is just a starting point. Brands cut their clothes differently based on regional body blocks. Here is what I do when buying international labels.

• European brands (Zara, Mango, Maje): They often run narrow in the shoulders and hips compared to US brands. If a US 6 converts to an EU 38, consider sizing up to a 40 if the fabric has zero stretch.
• Japanese labels (Uniqlo, Beams): JP sizing is notoriously smaller and shorter. A US Medium might technically map to a JP Large, but the sleeves and torso will still sit shorter. If you are tall or have broad shoulders, size up heavily.
• UK high street (ASOS, Topshop): UK and AU womenswear sizes generally align perfectly. A UK 10 is usually a solid AU 10. However, UK trousers tend to have a slightly higher natural waist cut than US equivalents.

Men’s quick conversion map

Chest measurements in inches are the most reliable metric for men’s tops, but here is the standard mapping.

• Tops and jackets: US Small, Medium, and Large map closely to EU 46, 48 to 50, and 52 to 54.
• Trousers and jeans: Stick to your waist measurement in inches. The EU number will vary wildly by brand, so always check the inseam note provided by our tool.

Five fabric rules that save returns

Your converted size means nothing if the fabric works against you. Check the composition tag on the product page before checking out.

1. Check the elastane percentage. Anything with 2 to 3 percent elastane or spandex will stretch out by half a size after two hours of wear. Size down if you are between sizes.
2. Beware of rigid denim. 100 percent cotton jeans will not forgive a tight fit. If your converted size feels like a gamble, always take the larger option.
3. Knit versus woven. Sweaters and jersey knits drape and forgive. Poplin cotton shirts and structured blazers do not. Measure your shoulders carefully for woven tops.
4. Mind the rise. High rise trousers sit at the narrowest part of your waist. Low rise sits on the wider hip bones. Adjust your expectations based on where the waistband actually rests.
5. Store your metrics. Keep your current bust, waist, and hip measurements in both inches and centimeters saved in your phone notes.
