The best time to visit is from May to October, with peak tourism in July and August, when it can get quite crowded. To kickstart your adventure, you’ll arrive in Tirana, the capital of Albania. Once you land, the first thing you’ll want to do is rent a car, which can conveniently be picked up at the airport.
Durrës
Your base for the next four nights will be the beautiful coastal town of Durrës, located just 30 minutes from Tirana by car. As Albania’s second-largest city, Durrës offers a unique blend of seaside charm and historic significance. From here, we’ll take day trips to explore central Albania.
Lake Bovilla & Tirana
After settling into your beachfront apartment, it’s time to hit the road. Your first trip from Durrës will be to Lake Bovilla, a hidden gem just a 1-hour and 15-minute drive away. To reach the lake’s viewpoint, you’ll need to hike about half a kilometer. The moderate hike features safe stairs, and the panoramic views of this emerald reservoir make the effort worthwhile. Fun fact: this lake supplies most of the drinking water to Tirana! After the hike, enjoy lunch at Bovilla Restaurant while overlooking the stunning waters.
In the afternoon, head to Tirana, which is just 50 minutes away. Tirana is a vibrant city known for its rich history and excellent cuisine. Good morning from the seaside! Today, we’re heading to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famously known as “The City of a Thousand Windows.” Berat is a stunning blend of Ottoman and Albanian architecture. The next day, it’s time to leave Durrës and head southwest to the Albanian Riviera, often referred to as the “Maldives of Europe” for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters.
On your way, make a stop in Vlorë, Albania’s former capital. Explore its vibrant streets filled with cozy cafés, colorful houses, and historical landmarks such as the Muradie Mosque, which dates back to the 16th century. Take a relaxing stroll along Vlorë’s picturesque promenade, where the sea meets the mountains—a view reminiscent of Switzerland’s alpine lakes.
Just a 10-minute drive from Vlorë, you’ll find St. Mary’s Monastery, accessible via a charming wooden pathway that feels like something out of a fairy tale. The monastery is surrounded by a lagoon teeming with wildlife, including flamingos.
Continue your journey south to the Brataj Stone Bridge, which spans a stunning turquoise river. This hidden gem is perfect for a refreshing swim, and its serene beauty showcases why Albania is such a magical destination.
Sarandë & Ksamil
Welcome to Sarandë, your home for the next three nights! This coastal town boasts a horseshoe-shaped bay and sparkling Mediterranean waters. Spend your morning exploring the town and enjoying its vibrant promenade.
In the afternoon, head to Ksamil, a charming village just 15 minutes away by car. Known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, Ksamil is a slice of paradise. Rent a sunbed, sip on an Aperol Spritz, and bask in the beauty of the Albanian Riviera.
The Blue Eye & Butrint
Start your day with a visit to the Blue Eye, a breathtaking natural spring located 35 minutes from Sarandë. You can rent an e-scooter to travel from the parking lot to the spring. The Blue Eye’s mesmerizing waters are so clear that you can see straight to the bottom of its 50-meter-deep pool.
Next, visit Butrint, Albania’s most famous archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once an ancient Greek and later Roman city, Butrint is filled with fascinating ruins, including a remarkably preserved Greek theater. The site is surrounded by stunning landscapes, making it a must-see destination.
Gjirokastër & Benja Thermal Baths
Today, we’re saying goodbye to Sarandë and heading north to Gjirokastër, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This charming Ottoman-era town is known for its distinctive architecture and handmade crafts. Visit the Gjirokastër Castle, which offers panoramic views of the valley and mountains.
For lunch, stop by Taverna Tradicionale Kardashi, where you can savor delicious, home-cooked Albanian dishes.
Next, drive to the Benja Thermal Baths, located about an hour and 20 minutes away. These mineral-rich hot springs are believed to have healing properties. Just above the pools, you’ll find a medieval bridge spanning a bright turquoise river—an idyllic spot for photos.
Durrës
Returning to Durrës, you’ll spend two more nights here. Take this opportunity to explore the city itself, which is Albania’s oldest and most important port. Visit the Roman Amphitheater, a massive structure that provides a glimpse into the city’s ancient history. In the afternoon, relax on the beaches along the lively Durrës promenade.
For a quieter escape, head to nearby Golem, where you’ll find beautiful beaches and resorts.
Kruja

Your final destination is Theth, a breathtaking village nestled in the Albanian Alps. The drive takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes, offering spectacular views along the way.
