How Long Should Sweatpants Be?
Many people struggle with the length. A good pair of sweatpants should end exactly at the collar of your shoe. If your sweatpants have elastic cuffs at the bottom, they will naturally pool just a little bit around your ankles. If they have open hems, they should fall straight down without dragging on the floor.
If you are taller than average, look for brands that offer tall inseam options. Standard sweatpants usually have an inseam around 29 to 32 inches, which can look awkward and cropped if you are over six feet tall.
How to Measure Your Waist and Inseam
Sweatpants are forgiving because of the elastic waistbands. You usually have about an inch of breathing room, but getting your core measurements right is still important.
- Measure your waist: Wrap a measuring tape slightly below your natural waistline. Keep one finger between the tape and your body. This ensures you account for the relaxed fit sweatpants are known for.
- Measure your hips: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips. If your hips fall into a larger size category than your waist, buy the larger size. The drawstring will help keep the waist secure.
- Check your inseam: Grab your favorite fitting pants. Measure from the crotch seam straight down to the bottom of the leg. Match this number against the brand size guide.
Fabric Matters: Watch Out for Shrinkage
Not all brands size their clothes the same way, and the fabric composition changes everything. If you buy sweatpants made of 100% cotton fleece, expect them to shrink up to 5% after the first few warm washes. If you are between sizes, always size up for pure cotton.
On the other hand, sweatpants made from a cotton and polyester blend are highly resistant to shrinking. You can safely buy your true size without worrying about them getting tighter over time.

How to Stretch Out Shrunken Sweatpants
If you accidentally dried your sweatpants on high heat and they shrank, you can easily stretch them back out.
- Fill a basin with warm water and mix in 1 tablespoon of baby shampoo or heavy hair conditioner.
- Fully submerge the sweatpants and let them soak for 30 minutes. The conditioner relaxes the tight cotton fibers.
- Take them out, wring the water out very gently, and lay them flat on a large towel.
- Use your hands to firmly pull and stretch the fabric back to its original shape. Place heavy books on the edges to hold the stretch in place while they air dry.
